Unit Overview
- UGC NET/JRF एवं Assistant Professor Paper-1 | December 2026
- Western/Aristotelian Logic — Arguments, categorical propositions, mood–figure, fallacies, analogy और Venn diagrams
- Indian Logic — Pramāṇas, Anumāna, Vyāpti और Hetvābhāsa
Argument
- Supporting statements = Premises
- Supported statement = Conclusion
Example: All researchers are critical thinkers. Ravi is a researcher. Therefore, Ravi is a critical thinker.
- Major premise: All researchers are critical thinkers.
- Minor premise: Ravi is a researcher.
- Conclusion: Ravi is a critical thinker.
Conclusion Indicators
Premise Indicators: Because, Since, Given that, For, As indicated by,
Conclusion Indicators: Therefore, Hence, Thus, Consequently, It follows that,
Sentence
Example: "Delhi is the capital of India."
Deductive and Inductive Reasoning
Deductive Reasoning —
Example: All mammals are warm-blooded. Whales are mammals. Therefore, whales are warm-blooded।
Valid/Invalid, Sound/Unsound
Validity और Soundness
Validity concerns logical form, not actual truth.
Valid लेकिन Unsound — Example: All birds are mammals. All dogs are birds. Therefore, all dogs are mammals.
| Concept | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Truth/Falsity | Individual proposition की property |
| Validity/Invalidity | Deductive argument की property |
| Soundness | Valid argument + true premises |
Exam Trap: Proposition valid/invalid नहीं होती; true/false होती है। Argument true/false नहीं, valid/invalid कहा जाता है।
Inductive Reasoning —
Evaluation: Inductive argument: Strong/Weak, Cogent/Uncogent
Deductive बनाम Inductive
Deductive | Inductive |
|---|---|---|
| Support | Necessary | Probable |
| Evaluation | Valid/invalid | Strong/weak |
| Good argument | Sound | Cogent |
| New evidence | Valid form
| Example | Syllogism | Generalisation/prediction |
Most Important Trap: General-to-particular
Categorical Propositions —
Categorical Proposition
Example: All teachers are learners. — Quantifier: All; Subject: Teachers; Copula: Are; Predicate: Learners
Quantity और Quality
Universal (सभी), Particular (कुछ)
Affirmative, Negative
Four Standard Categorical Propositions: A–E–I–O
| Symbol | Standard Form | Quantity | Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | All S are P | Universal | Affirmative |
| E | No S are P | Universal | Negative |
| I | Some S are P | Particular | Affirmative |
| O | Some S are not P | Particular | Negative |
Distribution of Terms
| Proposition | Subject | Predicate |
|---|---|---|
| A: All S are P | Distributed | Undistributed |
| E: No S are P | Distributed | Distributed |
| I: Some S are P | Undistributed | Undistributed |
| O: Some S are not P | Undistributed | Distributed |
Example: "All teachers are educated." Teacher distributed; Educated undistributed।
"Only A are B" → All B are A। Example: "Only graduates are eligible" → "All eligible persons are graduates."
"None but A are B" → All B are A
"Not all S are P" → Some S are not P — O proposition
"All S are not P" → No S are P — E proposition (natural-language ambiguity से बचते हुए standard categorical interpretation)
Some S are P imply करता है; natural language में यह "some S are not P" भी suggest कर सकता है; exam में context/options देखें।
Immediate Inferences
Conversion
Valid Simple Conversion: E: No S are P → No P are S; I: Some S are P → Some P are S
Conversion by Limitation: Traditional logic में A: All S are P → Some P are S (यह existential import पर depend करता है)
O Proposition: O का valid conversion नहीं।
Obversion
1. Quality बदलें। 2. Obversion चारों forms — A, E, I, O — के लिए valid है।
| Original | Obverse |
|---|---|
| All S are P | No S are non-P |
| No S are P | All S are non-P |
| Some S are P | Some S are not non-P |
| Some S are not P | Some S are non-P |
Contraposition
1. Subject और predicate interchange करें। 2.
Valid: A proposition, O proposition
Limited/Invalid in Standard Form: E by limitation in traditional treatment; I invalid
Example: All humans are mortal. → Contrapositive: All non-mortals are non-humans.
Square of Opposition —
A: All S are P, E: No S are P, I: Some S are P, O: Some S are not P
Contradictory Relation
Pairs: A ↔ O, E ↔ I
Contrary Relation
Example: "All students are honest." और "No student is honest."
Subcontrary Relation
Subalternation
Relations: A → I, E → O. Universal = Superaltern; Particular = Subaltern
Modern Boolean interpretation में A और E से automatically existence imply नहीं होती।
Square of Opposition Summary
| Relation | Pair | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Contradictory | A–O, E–I | न दोनों true, न दोनों false |
| Contrary | A–E | दोनों true नहीं; दोनों false संभव |
| Subcontrary | I–O | दोनों false नहीं; दोनों true संभव |
| Subalternation | A–I, E–O | Truth down, falsity up |
Categorical Syllogism
Categorical Syllogism
तीन categorical propositions वाला deductive argument: Major premise, Minor premise, Conclusion। और तीन terms: Major Term (P), Minor Term (S), Middle Term (M)
Identification: Major Term = Conclusion का predicate। Minor Term = Conclusion का subject।
Example: All researchers are readers. All scholars are researchers. Therefore, all scholars are readers. — S = Scholars, P = Readers, M = Researchers
Mood
Major premise, minor premise और conclusion के A/E/I/O forms का क्रम।
Example: All M are P (A); All S are M (A); All S are P (A) → Mood: AAA
Figure
| Figure | Major Premise | Minor Premise |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | M–P | S–M |
| 2 | P–M | S–M |
| 3 | M–P | M–S |
| 4 | P–M | M–S |
Example: All mammals are animals. All dogs are mammals. Therefore, all dogs are animals. — Mood = AAA, Figure = 1, Form = AAA-1
Validity Rules of Categorical Syllogism
- 1. Exactly three terms
- 9. Modern Boolean interpretation में two universal premises से particular conclusion निकालना existential fallacy हो सकता है।
Formal Fallacies —
Formal Fallacy
Example: All dogs are animals. All cats are animals. Therefore, all cats are dogs.
No A are B. No C are B. Therefore… — Valid relation establish नहीं होती।
- Affirmative Conclusion from Negative Premise:
- Negative Conclusion from Affirmative Premises:
- Two Particular Premises: दो particular premises valid syllogistic conclusion नहीं देतीं।
- Existential Fallacy: Modern Boolean logic में universal premises से particular conclusion निकालना, जब existence assumed न हो।
Conditional Argument Fallacies
Affirming the Consequent — Example:
Denying the Antecedent — Example:
Informal Fallacies —
Language, relevance, evidence या assumptions में error।
| Fallacy | Meaning / Example |
|---|---|
| Appeal to Popularity (Ad Populum) | |
| Appeal to Pity (Ad Misericordiam) | Evidence |
| Appeal to Force (Ad Baculum) | Threat
| Straw Man | Opponent के actual argument को distort करके कमजोर version attack करना। |
| Red Herring | Relevant issue से attention हटाकर unrelated issue introduce करना। |
| Hasty Generalisation | Insufficient/unrepresentative cases से general conclusion — "दो online students fail हुए; इसलिए online education ineffective है।" |
| Slippery Slope | बिना adequate evidence छोटे first step से extreme chain of consequences predict करना। |
| Begging the Question | Conclusion
Feathers are light. Therefore, feathers cannot be dark."
Uses of Language
Functions of Language
Denotation and Connotation
Connotation: Term द्वारा implied attributes/qualities।
Example: Person → Educated person → Educated Indian person → Educated Indian researcher (Attributes बढ़े, applicable members कम हुए)
Terms
| Type | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Positive Term | किसी quality की presence | Honest |
| Negative Term | Quality की absence | Dishonest, non-living |
| Absolute Term | Independent meaning | Teacher |
| Relative Term | Relationship पर आधारित | Parent, teacher, employer |
| Concrete Term | Object/person | Scientist |
| Abstract Term | Quality/state | Scientificness, honesty |
Analogy —
Analogy
Synonym, Antonym, Part–whole, Cause–effect, Tool–function, Worker–workplace, Degree, Classification, Number relationship
Example: Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : School
Analogical Argument की Strength
- Relevant similarities
- Differences कितनी significant हैं?
- Cases
Venn Diagrams
Venn Diagram
A, E, I, O का Venn Representation
A: All S are P — S (S ⊆ P)
E: No S are P — S और P के overlap को shade करें। (S ∩ P = ∅)
I: Some S are P — S–P overlap में X रखें।
O: Some S are not P — S
Validity by Venn Diagram
Example: All M are P. All S are M. Therefore, all S are P. — Premises diagram
Indian Logic —
Pramā, Apramā and Pramāṇa
Six Major Pramāṇas
- 1. Pratyakṣa — Perception
- 2. Anumāna — Inference
- 3. Upamāna — Comparison
- 4. Śabda — Verbal Testimony
- 5. Arthāpatti — Postulation/Implication
- 6. Anupalabdhi — Non-apprehension
Schools और Accepted Pramāṇas
Pramāṇas |
|---|---|
| Cārvāka | केवल Pratyakṣa |
| Buddhism | Pratyakṣa और Anumāna |
| Vaiśeṣika | Pratyakṣa और Anumāna |
| Sāṃkhya | Pratyakṣa, Anumāna, Śabda |

| Bhāṭṭa Mīmāṃsā |
| Advaita Vedānta |
External Perception — पाँच external senses: Eyes (Form/colour), Ears (Sound), Nose (Smell), Tongue (Taste), Skin (Touch)
Internal Perception — Mind द्वारा internal states का perception: Pleasure, Pain, Desire, Cognition
Stages: Nirvikalpaka — Indeterminate, pre-conceptual perception। Savikalpaka — Determinate perception। Pratyabhijñā — Recognition: "यह वही व्यक्ति है जिसे मैंने पहले देखा था।"
Classic Example: Mountain has smoke. Wherever there is smoke, there is fire. Therefore, mountain has fire.
| Term | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pakṣa | Subject under consideration | Mountain |
| Sādhya | Probandum — to be proved | Fire |
| Hetu/Liṅga | Reason/sign | Smoke |
| Vyāpti | Invariable relation | Wherever smoke, there fire |
| Sapakṣa | Similar positive instances | Kitchen |
| Vipakṣa | Negative instances | Lake |
| Pakṣadharmatā | Hetu present in pakṣa | Smoke is on mountain |
Types of Anumāna
Purpose के आधार पर: Svārthānumāna — Inference for oneself। Parārthānumāna — Inference formally presented for another person।
Nyāya Five-Member Syllogism —
- 1. Pratijñā — Proposition: The mountain has fire.
- 2. Hetu — Reason: Because it has smoke.
- 3. Udāharaṇa — Universal Rule with Example: Wherever there is smoke, there is fire, as in a kitchen.
- 4. Upanaya — Application: The mountain has such smoke.
- 5. Nigamana — Conclusion: Therefore, the mountain has fire.
Vyāpya — pervaded/sign: Smoke। Vyāpaka — pervader: Fire।
Anvaya (Positive concomitance): Where smoke is present, fire is present. Vyatireka (Negative concomitance): Where fire is absent, smoke is absent.
Laukika — Trustworthy ordinary person का testimony।
Classic Example: Devadatta
Hetvābhāsa —
Hetvābhāsa
Savyabhicāra/Anaikāntika —
Hetu Sādhya से invariably connected नहीं। Example: Mountain has fire because it is knowable — "Knowable" fire
Viruddha —
Example: Sound is eternal because it is produced — Produced
Asiddha —
Hetu itself established नहीं। प्रकार: Āśrayāsiddha — Pakṣa itself unreal/non-existent (Sky-lotus is fragrant because it is a lotus)। Svarūpāsiddha — Hetu pakṣa में present नहीं (Sound is visible because it has colour)।
Bādhita —
Conclusion stronger knowledge/pramāṇa से contradicted है। Example: Fire is cold because it is a substance — Direct perception fire
Hetvābhāsa Quick Comparison
| Hetvābhāsa |
|---|---|
| Savyabhicāra | Hetu irregular/inconclusive |
| Viruddha | Hetu opposite conclusion
| Satpratipakṣa | Counter-reason opposite conclusion support
